Energy Union: Commission welcomes finalization of Clean Energy Package for all Europeans
Today, the European Council definitively approved the last four pieces of legislation in the Clean Energy Package for All Europeans, thus finalizing the legislative framework presented by the Juncker Commission in 2016.
“With its completion, we have made the EU’s Energy Union – one of the ten political priorities of the Juncker Commission – a reality. I truly believe it will accelerate the clean energy transition and give all Europeans access to secure, competitive and sustainable energy.” Said Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete.
The gradual transition of a largely Fossil fuel dependent towards a carbon-neutral economy is one of the greatest challenges of Europe. The new legislative framework fully respects the EU’s goal of reducing CO2 emissions by at least 40% by 2030, while modernizing the EU economy, creating jobs and improving fostering strong growth for all European citizens. By enabling a modern and stable legal environment, the clean energy package creates the ideal conditions for the public and private investments needed to ensure the transition to clean energy.
The new rules strengthen consumers’ rights by placing them at the heart of the energy transition. They create green growth and jobs while reducing our reliance on imported fossil fuels, thereby enhancing our security of supply and reducing CO2 emissions.
